Budo means "the way of war" (bu, "war"). But the Japanese character bu, as Deshimaru points out, also means to cease the struggle, to sheathe the sword.

This is the first time I've heard of a definition of "bu" to mean something other than, or opposite to "war", or "warfare". As a practicioner of budo(martial arts), I find eastern thought compelling. To quote Donn Draeger: "(Budo) is plastic Zen".

yes, I thought that was interesting: the way of war and to sheathe the sword

I don't quite understand the plastic zen quote...?
